Does your school have the secure fencing it needs and does your fencing meet Ofsted standards? Children need to be protected in schools as well as teachers, which is why school security fencing and gates should offer adequate protection from intruders.

Fencing should also offer noise protection for neighbouring residential areas and aesthetics is important as schools should look like schools and not like a prison. All school fencing and gates must comply to BS EN 1176 standard and pass a RoSPA inspection.

SR rated security fencing

SR rated fencing is the most commonly used type of school security fencing in the UK. It provides a basic level of protection and is designed to resist opportunistic attacks. It is widely used in school environments, where the main objective is to deter casual intruders.

Guidelines for school security fencing and gates

The government announced in July 2024 their latest update of "Site Security Guidance" which states:

  • School security needs to be kept under constant review, with vulnerable areas identified and remedial actions taken to address any weaknesses.
  • The school’s perimeter is the first line of defence and should be protected with a secure fence or railings such as Weldmesh fencing to BS1722 or expanded metal or railings over 2.0m high.
  • Gates should be the same height as the fencing, and be fitted with appropriate mechanisms such as anti-lift hinges and locking mechanisms that do not aid climbing and are secured using an approved locking mechanism.

From fully compliant secure fencing systems for schools, we can install a variety of PAS 68 crash rated automated gates and bollards to complement Security Rated fencing systems.

  • V Mesh fencing

V Mesh fencing is a type of long-lasting, rigid fence is economical to install and is difficult to climb making it a good perimeter fence.

  • RoSPA fencing compliant railings for playgrounds

RoSPA recommend play areas should be contained by good quality fencing that reduces risks. RoSPA compliant fences attempt to eliminate instances of entrapment in the fence, removing sharp objects and other potential damages. These railings come in a variety of designs and colours to suit your requirements including blunt top, finial top, bow top and playground. As well as options of tubular and solid bar.

  • Rolled top mesh fencing

This fencing provides a safe option in environments, such as schools, where sharp edges need to be covered. The top and bottom edges of the rolled top mesh fence panel are folded back on themselves creating a roll. This rolled top fencing system is very popular because it has lower fences which reduces the risk of danger. It is easy to install, is dog-proof and highly durable and is low maintenance.

  • Rolled welded mesh fencing

Welded mesh fencing is a traditional and cost-effective way to put a boundary in place as it is easy to install. It can be erected on steel or concrete posts and provides a high level of rigidity.

  • Chainlink fencing

Chainlink is a traditional fence for boundary demarcation and provides a good level of security.  It can be erected on uneven ground, on steel or concrete posts and can have barbed or razor wire toppings for higher security.

  • 868 mesh fencing

This fencing is long-life, very versatile and stronger than single bar mesh panel fencing. The 868 mesh fencing panels are fixed to steel posts with anti-vandal fixings and secured with clamps.

  • 358 mesh fencing

This very secure and durable fencing option is high quality and long lasting. It is designed to provide a very high level of security. 358 mesh fence panels are fixed to steel posts with anti-vandal clamp strips and bolts and is designed to be very difficult to climb or cut with hand tools.

  • Sports fencing and multi-use games area fencing (MUGA)

This is an excellent sports fencing option for pitches because it is very durable and dampens sound. Particularly for sports pitches where the mesh will be used as a rebound board.
